Flashback Stuns Hawgs in Season Opener

May 23rd, 2018

Please read all the way to the bottom.

Just before the game started, the members of The Hawgs collected their championship shirts for having won the top level title in the Winter 2018 season playoffs. They were this God-awful yellow color (that they had requested) and then the players took the court to begin their quest for yet another title. But the Flashback squad was having none of it. The Hawgs squeaked out a 27-24 halftime lead, but Flashback grabbed the lead early in the second half and never looked back in the 59-53 victory. Flashback got balanced scoring, with four players in double figures. The win also marked the return of Aaron Anderson, who spends his long, cold winters playing professional basketball in Sweden. (And yes, every time he misses a free throw, we all think to ourselves "You done messed up now, A-a-ron!")

In other games:

Lights Out 56, Blue Coconuts 54 - This game was tight throughout. The Coconuts held a two-point halftime lead, thanks in large part to Paul Choi tossing in four of his (shall we say, unorthodox) three-pointers. But Lights Out got balanced scoring in the second half to complete the comeback win. Oscar Medina was stellar for Lights Out, leading the scoring with 14 points and pulling down 15 rebounds. (See Player of the Week.) Sean Arrington was great for Blue, scoring 22 points in the second half, including 8-8 from the free-throw line. Mike Luke, who sometimes stands around wearing a ref shirt (I don't want to overstate what he does), made his Coconuts debut. He promised to make nine threes and only fell seven short of his goal. There's always next week.

More Jumpers 51, The Show 49 - While one team was called The Show, the actual show was on the other team. Justin Hatter scored 26 points, including several long threes, to lead More Jumpers to the win.

RTP 50, Really Big Team 45 - Rusty Mitchell scored 15 points, including 9 of 12 at the line, to lead RTP. Dominic Dicochea had 32 in a losing effort.

LeBrontourage 62, Deadly Venoms 59 - LeBrontourage had only four players score in the game, but all four scored in double figures in an exciting three-point victory. Kyle Weleba and Dylan Johnson each scored 18 points in the win. Sama Taku had 25 points for the Venoms.

Sunshine Boys 50, DTC 42 - Jorge Mejia hit five threes and scored 17 points for DTC, but it wasn't enough. Sunshine Boys trailed by four at the half, but roared back for the win.

BOS 45, Tucson Hustle 44 - Great game! That's all I have to say about that.

Franchise 44, Ballin' 43 - We had back-to-back killer one-point games late on Sunday. Marco Escobar had 18 points for Franchise.

A huge number of teams opted out for Memorial Day, so we're not even sure we're going to have games. Please watch the website. The following Sunday, now that club volleyball is over, we're going to have enough court space that virtually every team in the league will play on the same day. No byes! Yay!

As it turns out, the venue is hosting something this weekend. That, coupled with the aforementioned opt-outs, leaves us with a very limited schedule this week as we welcome two new teams--Glass Monkeys and Top Ballers. The Glass Monkeys originally wanted to be called the Participation Trophies, which would have been one of the great names of all time. Remember, next week, we have the first of what we hope with be multiple No-Bye Sundays, where every team in the league plays on the same day. We're all looking forward to it. Have a safe and relaxing Memorial Day Weekend. (It feels weird to say "Happy Memorial Day," considering the nature of the holiday.
