We had a great final day of the regular season. with several outstanding games (and a bare minimum of whining). More on the whining later.
As mentioned herein before, it has been a tumultuous season, with far too many byes on the schedule for anybody's liking. And a solution is in the works. At the same time, many of the games have been outrageously entertaining. For example, this week:
Kenny Neal's Team 48, Outlawz 47 - So, this one team comes down the court, trailing by one, clock ticking down, and gets off a shot that goes! Outlawz up one. Unfortunately for them, there were still three seconds on the clock. Kenny Neal's Team gets the ball, gets off a shot right before the buzzer and drains in for the one-point win.
Hey Arnold! 74, More Jumpers 71 - Justin Hatter had 29 points for the Jumpers but it wasn't quite enough to hold off the balanced scoring of the Arnold! squad. Arnold Enos (his own self) had 16, Drew Harris had 20, while Kenny Whetten and Richard Gomez combined for 21 points and 16 rebounds.
The Regulators 55, Dawgs 51 - Jose Barrera pulled down 16 rebounds for the winners.
Ninety-Six 69, Second Squad 62 - Phil Raimo (who once played on a Little League baseball team that I coached) had a big-time double-double (19 points and 15 rebounds to lead Ninety-Six.
Nike 53, DTC 52 - Drae Johnson hit one of two free throws with two seconds left to break a tie and give Nike the win. Nike had held a three-point lead just seconds earlier but a big-time three by Jorge Mejia tied the game for DTC.
Hickory 47, Alorica Royals 41 - Levi Baugus had 16 points and five boards to lead Hickory to the close-fought win. Hieu Le had a spectacular game for the Royals, scoring 27 points and grabbing six rebounds.
Tucson Hustle 54, HMB 46 - This was a seesaw battle that went right down to the end of the game. Rene Campillo had 16 for the winners, while Tyler Shipman threw in 19 for HMB.
As for the whining, those of you who insist on doing so, please stop. The other day, one guy basically said that whining is part of his game. How proud he must be.
The single-elimination playoffs begin this coming Sunday. We will break the six regular-season divisions into eight divisions for the playoffs. Since this is the end of our 30th year(!), we have something special. The winners of each division will get championship T-shirts!!! No, really.
