Off To a Somewhat Shaky Start

May 24th, 2017

The bane of any recreation league is the forfeit. It's unfair to the team that shows up. It's unfair to the two or three people on the forfeiting team that show up. And it absolutely sucks for the people who run the league on a razor-thin margin. When there's a forfeit, we still have to pay rent for the court and I still pay the refs and the scorekeeper. I imagine that some people who run other leagues might not pay the people, but I'm not going to ask people to show up to work and not pay them.

For a variety of reasons that defy solutions, we keep having forfeits on the first day of the league. My first instinct is to rail about the fact that there are eight million ways to communicate these days (email, websites, texts) and yet, for some reason, people don't communicate for crap. Before the first games of this season this past Sunday, I put the schedule up on the website and I had one of my high-school basketball players text everybody who had signed up for the season just to make sure that their team was still going to play.

Well, we had one team that didn't show up at all (they're now out of the league). Two other teams had three players each show up (two more forfeits). Two other teams cancelled at the last minute. Yet another had given me a wrong phone number and never got the text. (They managed to show up at the last minute.) It was a nightmare. I will have to give the teams that did show up another game and it cost the league hundreds of dollars. I'm going to have to figure out a way to get the league off to a better start. If you have any ideas, I'd be happy to listen.

Of the games we did have, most were really good.

Gotem 68, Sonora 54 - This was a back-and-forth affair until late in the second half, when Gotem pulled away. Zeke Odina had 32 points for the winners.

Hawgs 82, Blue Coconuts 77 - Donte Williams had 39 points for The Hawgs, while Sean Arrington had 30 for the Coconuts. Arrington was also honored as the Outstanding Defensive Player for the Winter 2017 season.

Suicide Squad 70, Second Squad 65 - This was one of the stranger games in recent memory. Suicide Squad jumped out to a huge lead and it looked like a blowout was coming. But then Second Squad started pressing (something that rarely works in adult-recreation leagues). Well, it worked this time and Second Squad roared back and took the lead. It looked like they had the game safely in hand, holding a six-point lead with less than a minute to go. Damian Guy hit a three to cut the lead in half. He then stole the inbounds pass and hit another three. It was like Reggie Miller all over again. The game went overtime and Suicide Squad pulled away for a bizarre win.

Toon Squad 56, Frosty Hesson 55 - Yes, Toon Squad won. Yes, Toon Squad is undefeated. Yes, life is good!

The venue is holding a youth tournament this Sunday, so we have an abbreviated schedule. There will only be games from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. Next week, June 4th, EVERY team in the league will play. Some teams will be making their season debut on the 4th. We will have two courts going from 9:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. It's going to be spectacular. This also give many teams two more weeks to get their financial affairs in order. No pay, no play.

Let's have a great season.
