Basil Holds Off Lights Out In a Thriller

February 9th, 2017

PLEASE NOTE THAT, IN ORDER TO MAKE UP FOR LAST WEEK'S SHORT SCHEDULE, WE WILL BE RUNNING THREE COURTS FROM 6:00 - 9:00 P.M. THIS SUNDAY. THE SCHEDULE FOR THOSE GAMES IS BELOW. ALSO THE STATS WILL BE OUT THIS WEEK. THANKS.

The abbreviated schedule we had last week due to the Super Bowl was filled with action and more than a couple surprises. The team that calls itself Basil distinguished itself with a gritty 73-69 over the high-flying (get it? They're from the Air Force base) Lights Out squad. Basil jumped out early and grabbed a double-digit lead. Lights Out fought back several time to close it to three or four points, but never could grab the lead.

In other games:

--Hey Arnold 74!, SWAT 72 - In a perfect example of my kind of basketball, Hey Arnold! and SWAT raced up and down the floor, playing clean, efficient basketball, busting threes and keeping their mouths shut in the process. It went right down to the wire and it was wonderful!

--Suicide Squad 69, Sunshine Boys 52 - I keep threatening to move Suicide Squad up to a higher league and they just keep winning. This time they used a barrage of three-point shooting and the all-around play of Damian Guy to put away the Sunshine Boys.

--Flying Squirrels 67, R.T.P. 43 - A day after the Arizona Wildcats took that whuppin' at the hands of Oregon, R.T.P. duplicated the feat in their game against the Flying Squirrels. The usually potent R.T.P. offense took the day off as Justin Williams and the guys could not buy a basket. Meanwhile, the Squirrels were bombing away from long range with incredible efficiency, thus the 24-point margin.

One other thing. Our good friend Junior is in Heaven this week. No, he didn't temporarily die. It's just that the hellhole he lives in (California) has a few bright spots, one of them being Pebble Beach Golf Course. It just so happens that Junior, who loves golf, lives right down the street from Pebble Beach, so he's got to be loving life right now. (The PGA Tournament is at Pebble Beach this weekend.) A few years ago, Junior got a job working at one of Tucson's snazzier golf courses. That summer, working outdoors all day, he went from looking like the guy who played Samuel L. Jackson's son in "Coach Carter" to looking like Samuel L. Jackson. It was cool. He also got good in golf, which often leads to bouts of frustration. The secret to golf is to stay crappy at it, so when you do play, all you need is one or two good shots per round to make you happy. "My score was 140 today, but you should have seen the shot I had on 13."
